I agree, Mimi, it does give that impression. Who knows, maybe he is, which would be a pity — OTOH, I guess if that’s what works for him, the important thing is that he believes in God and practices his faith. But I do hope he hasn’t turned his back on Orthodoxy, which is inconceivable to me.
Philippa, thanks so much for posting this — I had no idea of this article! I always liked Gorby, myself!
I don’t believe St. Francis was pre-schism. How wonderful that he was instrumental in Father Seraphim’s journey. This might not be very Orthodox, but I find a lot of Catholic Saints to be very inspiring.
According to Wikipedia, his dates are September 26, 1181 or 1182 – October 3, 1226, so not that far after the schism.

Who, Me!?!!
A happily married Orthodox Christian. Mom of two. A non-traditional undergrad student with plans to have her BA in History by summer of 2009. Love to read, do crafty type stuff, poke in the garden. But especially “have a cup of tea.”
That’s neat. I guess it was an open secret, I always knew he was at least sympathetic.
But that article kind of gives the impression he’s Roman Catholic, does it not?

Ladies, I did not get the impression that MG was leaning towards Orthodoxy. Wasn’t St. Francis pre-schism? If so, then there is no issue, is there?
I know that it was St. Francis who was very instrumental in leading my spiritual big brother, Fr. Seraphim, to Orthodox monasticism.
None the less, I was very pleased re: MG.
