Christ, harrower of hell

O Key of David,
and scepter of the house of Israel,
you open, and no one shuts,
you shut, and no one opens:
come, and lead the prisoner
from jail,
seated in darkness
and in the shadow of death.

Isaiah 22:22 The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; so he shall open, and no one shall shut; and he shall shut, and no one shall open.

Revelation 3:7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens”:

Christmas is a season of Life. The Life is Christ, come to redeem mankind from the prison of death.

Death is unnatural. We were created for eternal life in the Garden. Our rebellion against God plunged us into death. We are “seated in darkness” and in the “shadow of death.” But Christ our King, the “Key of David,” has come bearing His Sceptre to lead us, the prisoners, from the jail in which we are held captive. He has set us free! Fear no more, the death caused by rebellion, for Christ is born. What He opens, “no one shall shut, and He shall shut, and no one shall open.”

  1. Hi David,

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment!

You’re more than welcome! It is wonderful how God puts His words in front of our eyes at particular times in life just when we seem to need the boost.

    Many years to you!

  2. As I’m about to take the name David here in a couple of days, this is particularly meaningful. In all my time reading Scripture, this phrase has never leapt out at me. Thank you.
